The forbidden fruit

I love apples. So what a delightful surprise when I discovered that we have a mature tree in our front yard, laden with beautiful golden-red fruits!

Our apple tree

Apples (of an unknown variety) ripe for the picking.

We went out over the weekend to begin harvesting apples, some of which had already fallen to the ground. The tree is on the other side of our fence, right by a very highly trafficked sidewalk. Some of the fruits had fallen on the sidewalk and rolled into the road; I saw a gentleman gathering fallen ones into his coat. It’s nice to think the apples are feeding more in our community than just us.

That said, I have been enjoying these fruits to their fullest. I’m looking for ways to keep them well into the fall. I guess the tree will keep producing for a few weeks … but after that? Any suggestions?
