Longest day of the year

Summer Solstice
The whole year building, building,
Building to this day.

I wake before six to streaming sunlight,
Blue sky.

Soon it will begin –
The long spiral into darkness.
Sticky July afternoons
Fading into wilting August leaves.

The green is at its brightest.

For today,
I let the grass grow,
Let the dandelion go to seed
And fill every empty piece of earth
With whorls of green.

Just once a year,
With endless hours of light,
We can again
(for one day)
believe in immortality.
